Chelsea 2 West Ham 1: Late Diego Costa strike gives Antonio Conte winning start

Well, that’s exactly what he got as Costa charged around like a bull in a china shop, getting right under the skin of the West Ham back four.

It was Costa at his snarling best, but it didn’t take long before he too went into referee Anthony Taylor’s book for one wind-up too many.

Conte was at it too, jumping up and down and waving his arms around furiously when Oscar failed to win a penalty after going down cheaply under the softest of touches from Winston Reid.

In the brief moments when some football broke out, Branislav Ivanovic forced a fine low save from Adrian, and Hazard twice went close.

Hazard is another player whose career stalled last season and he certainly started this game brightly, even if he was asked to do a lot of defensive work deep in his own half.

West Ham suffered a blow when £20m new boy Andre Ayew limped off after 34 minutes with a thigh injury, but they had held their own.
