Change of captain at Newcastle as Fabricio Coloccini ruled out

“Jonjo has certainly been vocal since he’s been here”

But it is character he is looking for more than anything else and that’s why he’ll turn to Shelvey as his lieutenant on the pitch.

“Jonjo has certainly been vocal since he’s been here,” said McClaren.

“Signing players like him and Andros Townsend in January has brought character into the side.

“That’s something we have lacked especially away from home and it’s one of the reasons we’re not winning.

“The captain has to encapsulate what you are trying to say, that’s one of the reasons we brought Jonjo to this club because he epitomises what we want to achieve going forward.

“But tomorrow night I’m looking for 11 captains out there, because we’re not producing enough, especially away from home.

“We need someone to drive this team and lead by example. We’ve had a lot of criticism and it will be interesting to see how we cope without Colo. Let’s see who steps forward.”
