Championship round-up: Norwich move top, Chelsea starlet scores as Bristol City thrash Fulham and Derby lose again

24 Sep

It’s been another thrilling day of action in the Championship…

Norwich 3-1 Burton

Norwich are the new Championship leaders after winning their first ever meeting with Burton Albion. Martin Olsson fired the Canaries into a half-time lead. Lucas Akins levelled for the visitors just a minute into the second half but the home side hit back almost immediately through Josh Murphy. Norwich missed a penalty before Ivo Pinto struck two minutes from time to seal a sixth win of the season for Alex Neil’s side and move them into top spot.

Reading 1-0 Huddersfield

Huddersfield, who began the day top of the table, now sit in second after falling to defeat at Reading. The Terriers were reduced to ten men midway through the first half when Rajiv van La Parra was booked twice in quick succession. Town held out until just before half-time, when Roy Beerens struck what proved to be the winner. Jaap Stam’s side are now up to fourth, just two points behind David Wagner’s Terriers.

Brighton 2-0 Barnsley

Brighton are up to third after they inflicted a second straight defeat on Barnsley at the Amex. Glenn Murray scored either side of the break to earn Chris Hughton’s Seagulls a comfortable win – their third in succession. Barnsley fall outside of the play-off places.

Fulham 0-4 Bristol City

Tammy Abraham scored again for Bristol City as they beat Fulham at Craven Cottage for the second time this week. On-loan Chelsea striker Abraham, who scored the winner in the midweek EFL Cup clash, netted his tenth goal of the campaign to give City an early lead. Luke Freeman and Bobby Reid extended the visitors’ advantage before Fulham were reduced to ten men when Kevin McDonald was shown a straight red for a late challenge. Aden Flint added a fourth for Lee Johnson’s side late on.

Wolves 3-1 Brentford

Wolves moved above Brentford and up to eighth with their second consecutive win. Joao Teixeira put the home side 2-0 up. Sullay Kaikai reduced the deficit but record signing Ivan Cavaleiro netted in stoppage time to seal all three points for Wolves. The Bees, unbeaten in four matches prior to their trip to Molineux, drop to ninth.

Leeds United 1-0 Ipswich

Leeds continued their fine run as they made it three straight wins in the Championship – and four in all competitions – with a hard-fought win over Ipswich Town at Elland Road. Chris Wood, who had a spell on loan at the Tractor Boys, scored the winner with a 35th-minute header.

Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Sheffield Wednesday came from behind to snatch a dramatic victory over Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough. The visitors led at half-time through Henri Lansbury but Kieran Lee drew the Owls level midway through the second half and then struck again in stoppage time to win it. Wednesday are now up to 11th, while Forest slip to 15th having failed to win any of their last four Championship games.

Derby 1-2 Blackburn

Derby’s woes continued as Blackburn came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at the iPro Stadium. Matej Vydra broke the deadlock with the Rams’ first home league goal of the season. But Marvin Emnes and Danny Graham struck to win it for Owen Coyle’s Rovers. Derby, with just one win all season, drop into the relegation zone, while Blackburn are now up to 20th.

Rotherham 1-2 Cardiff

Cardiff are off the bottom of the table after fighting back to beat Rotherham at the New York Stadium. The Millers led through Isaiah Brown but a quick-fire double from ex-Liverpool and Southampton striker Rickie Lambert earned the visitors a vital win. The Bluebirds are up to 21st in the table, while Rotherham drop to 23rd, with Wigan now propping up the table.

QPR 1-1 Birmingham

QPR failed to win for the fourth match in succession as they were held at home by Birmingham. Both the goals came in the first half, with Lukas Jutkiewicz heading the visitors ahead before Steven Caulker levelled for QPR.
