Both sides ended the game with ten men, after Sam Hutchinson was dismissed at Hillsborough on 59 minutes, before City’s Gary O’Neil saw red for a second booking.
Lee Tomlin missed a penalty for the Robins then Barry Bannan drew the Owls level. With five minutes of added time already on the clock, Kieran Lee snatched Carlos Carvalhal’s side a valuable victory.
Barnsley made it five wins from their opening seven Championship matches when they were 4-0 winners at Wolverhampton.
The division’s newcomers scored all four goals in the second half, Conor Hourihane opening the scoring on 73 minutes, before Adam Hammill, Saidy Janko and Tom Bradshaw netted in the final ten minutes at Molineux.
