New signing Steven Pienaar could make a quick debut for Sunderland against Middlesbrough on Sunday but Lee Cattermole is out.
Pienaar signed a one-year deal with the Black Cats on Friday and may feature against Boro as David Moyes’ side look to bounce back from the opening-day defeat at Man City.
Cattermole will not be involved after undergoing surgery to repair a double hernia and could be sidelined for up to six weeks in what is a blow to Moyes early in the campaign.
Elsewhere, defender Lamine Kone, a transfer target for Everton, is also out of Sunday’s game with a back injury but recent arrival from Chelsea, Papy Djilobodji, will be in the squad.
Boss Moyes is looking forward to taking charge of his first competitive game at home as Sunderland boss and he’s urged his players to make the Stadium of Light as difficult a place as possible for opposition teams.
He said: “We have to take advantage. The only thing I’m interested in is winning. I’m really looking forward to getting to the Stadium of Light. With it being a derby it makes it even more interesting.
“There’s a lot of really good things here. We haven’t lost many games in 2016 and we need to use our home ground to our advantage.”
