Candidates that could replace Steve McClaren at relegation-threatened Newcastle

Alan Shearer

The Toon legend speaks for the Geordie nation with his impassioned rants on Match of the Day.

But there is little chance of Shearer having a second stint in charge of his hometown club.

For a start, he’s enjoying life as a BBC pundit – and is becoming very good at it.

More significantly, Ashley and Shearer don’t like each other very much after his first ill-fated time in charge.

Don’t forget, it was Shearer who took Newcastle down the last time they were relegated and while the damage had been done long before his arrival, the scars are still there for him.

Kevin Keegan

He wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole after his last experience of working with Ashley.
