Emre Can has been ruled out for at least another few days but Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is finally closing in on a return to action.
Can had been pictured back in full training following his ankle injury and was expected to be available for Friday’s trip to Chelsea, but boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed at his press conference on Wednesday that the Germany international would not be considered as he still needs to build up his fitness.
It is now hoped the midfielder will be ready to be involved in Liverpool’s trip to Derby in the EFL Cup on Tuesday after sitting out the last two games.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Gomez is making good progress as he looks to be back in training in early October.
The youngster has been out since he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee playing for England Under-21s last October.
He had virtually recovered from the knee injury in July but then suffered a major setback after it was revealed he had tendinopathy in his Achilles.
Klopp is keen to get the teenager, signed from Charlton last summer for £3.5million, back as soon as possible as he will give him more options in defence, with Gomez able to operate at left-back or centre-back.
Gomez made a bright start to his Liverpool career last season at left-back where he made seven appearances before injury struck.
