Calais migrants using makeshift RAFTS to cross channel as Britain braces for fresh influx

But a French coastguard spokesman told newspaper La Voix du Nord groups of migrants are now attempting the crossing “at night, on unequipped boats, in greater numbers, without the slightest notion of navigation and totally unaware of the very real dangers that such attempts represent”.

They added that, in response, the agency has “intensified” surveillance by land, sea and air in a bid to stop such perilous efforts.

The revelations come after aid workers said the dismantlement of the Jungle camp is driving desperate migrants to increasingly desperate efforts to reach Britain.
