Mr Hamilton pointed out the economic arguments that weighed heavily in favour of Scotland remaining part of the UK.
He said: “At the time of the last referendum, oil was $100 a barrel. Today its $50. The idea that Scotland could contemplate independence from the UK is just moonshine.
“But if that’s what the Scottish people want, let them have it. The Scottish people have said no, and no doesn’t mean yes. It’s just the SNP trying it on for publicity reasons. Scotland would become a basket case with an SNP government in an independent country.
