Listen to the incredible tale of how legendary manager Brian Clough went about trying to break the British transfer record for Dean Saunders, in the video above.


Back in 1991, Saunders was the most sought after striker in English football, with top flight clubs queuing up to make record bids for his signature.

The Welsh attacker was playing for Derby County, and had Merseyside rivals Everton and Liverpool fighting to sign him.

Then double European Cup-winner Clough got involved.

In the 1970s Clough had led Derby to their first ever league title, but had since gone on to win titles, cups and European trophies galore with Nottingham Forest.

And now he wanted Saunders to sign for the Tricky Trees.

For the record, Saunders ended up going to Anfield for a record £2.9m fee, but he will never forget his encounter with Cloughie!
