Burnley have failed with a third bid for Brighton midfielder Dale Stephens, who is also on the wanted list of Crystal Palace.
Clarets boss Sean Dyche is desperate to bolster his midfield after winning promotion back to the Premier League and Stephens is at the top of his wanted list.
Burnley failed with an improved bid of £4million two weeks ago and reports claim their latest offer has also been knocked back by the Seagulls, who are determined to keep hold.
Stephens has yet to figure in pre-season, fuelling rumours he will soon be on the move, but Brighton insist he is carrying a knee injury and there is nothing sinister afoot.
Whether Burnley go back with a fourth bid remains to be seen, but they also face competition from the Eagles, who are reported to have joined the race for his signature.
If Palace do go on to sign Stephens then they could be willing to let Joe Ledley move on, with the Wales international also known to be on Burnley’s wanted list.
