There had been speculation that Britain’s status would actually be based on existing arrangements for non-EU countries like Norway and Switzerland. European leaders have indicated they will give the UK’s new government time to prepare for Brexit.
Mr Roth, who is from Mrs Merkel’s Social Democrat coalition partner party, said: “Until the end of the year should be sufficient.
“We should not let too much time go by.”
Insisting it should be possible to complete the whole process in time for the 2019 elections to the European Parliament, he stressed: “We can’t quibble about it – Brexit won.
“There can’t be any British members in the next European Parliament.”
