A statement from Northumbria Police said: “We were called at 7.19am to a report of concern for a man who had locked himself inside a room of a property in Carnation Terrace in Whickham.
“Police remain at the scene and are speaking with the man and trying to get him out of the room safely.
“Armed officers are in attendance as there is a possibility that the man may have a weapon inside the room with him.
“A small cordon has been put in place around the address to allow for the emergency services to deal with this incident.
“Other than this cordon local people are able to go about their business as normal.
“This is an isolated incident contained within the house and there are no roads closed.
“There is no risk to any members of the public at this time and our current priority is to get the man to come out of the room without causing any harm to himself or any of the officers inside the address.”
