Phelan became caretaker boss following Steve Bruce’s departure in July and was named Premier League manager of the month for August.

He said last month he had been offered the job, but no final confirmation was forthcoming amid ongoing speculation about the sale of the club.

Hull’s current owners, the Allam family, have been trying to find a buyer for several months, according to reports. This will be the former Manchester United assistant’s first permanent managerial job in football.

Speaking last month, Phelan said: “It’s difficult for me to comment because I don’t know all the issues. Takeovers are confusing, there are rumours. I’ve tried to stay focused on my players.

“Supporters want answers and they will get them in time. I’m under no illusions. I want it resolved but it’s not my decision.”

Hull are away at Bournemouth on Premier League duty on Saturday.
