Claude Puel has ruled England left-back Ryan Bertrand out of Southampton’s opening Premier League clash against Watford on Saturday.
The former Chelsea defender missed Saints’ 1-0 pre-season win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday with a minor injury and Matt Targett is set to deputise against the Hornets.
Targett played the majority of the match against the Spaniards at left back before being replaced by Sam McQueen in the closing stages at St Mary’s.
And Puel is not optimistic about Bertrand’s involvement next weekend.
“Ryan Bertrand has a little injury,” he told the club’s YouTube Channel.
“I don’t think it will be possible for Bertrand to play the next game. It’s a pity, but we have Matt Targett and also perhaps Sam McQueen who can take the place of Bertrand with a good level.”
Targett, 20, started 13 Premier League matches under Ronald Koeman last season but McQueen, who spent part of last season on loan at Southend United, is yet to make his top-flight debut.
