Newcastle are ready to offer Rafael Benitez a huge pay packet in the hope he will stay with the club even if they are relegated.

The Magpies could be relegated this evening if arch rivals Sunderland defeat Everton, and Benitez is unlikely to stay in charge if Championship football is on the agenda next season.

However reports are suggesting that Magpies owner Mike Ashley has not given up all hope of persuading him to stay, and could offer him a deal worth £5million.

Even so, Benitez will not be short of offers ahead of next season, and rumours linking the Spaniard with a potential switch to Everton are refusing to go away.

Roberto Martinez is under pressure at Goodison Park, and despite his connection with the red half of Merseyside, Everton officials are said to be considering Benitez as his replacement.

The chance to stay in the Premier League and even closer to his family, who are based on the Wirral, could be too good to turn down, if Everton do make an approach.
