Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce has admitted Jack Rodwell was unlucky not to be in his starting line-up for the draw with West Brom.
The former Manchester City man had been getting back to his best form in recent games so it was something of a surprise to see him on the bench at the weekend and he did not feature at all.
Instead Allardyce went with a return for Lee Cattermole who had impressed in training, and he wasn’t disappointed as the combative midfielder put in an all-action display.
Allardyce was quick to point out that Rodwell was unlucky to miss out, and told the Echo: “He (Rodwell) had his best run of performances since he joined the club but, for me, Catts just provided that energy that drives on the rest of the team,
“It was the first time I’ve taken a player out of the side who didn’t deserved to be out.
“Jack’s performances and his stats havenÂ’t dropped but I just thought Catts was the man on Saturday. On his performance, everybody would agree it was the right team and the right tactics.”
