‘Borussia Dortmund are favourites!’ – Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp expecting tough Europa League challenge
Thomas Tuchel’s side have the strongest on-paper squad left in the competition, and they are currently fighting with Bayern Muinich at the top of the German league for silverware.
They overcame another Premier League side in the last-16 of the Europa League, thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 on aggregate to set up the quarter-final game against Liverpool.
Klopp has admitted it is hard to disagree with the claim that Dortmund are favourites – for the game, and the competition outright – but the German boss is confident his players are up for the fight.
The former Dortmund boss said: “We have said Dortmund are favourites and I don’t think anyone disagrees with that and it is understandable considering they are having a good season.
“We have looked at the way Dortmund play but my players haven’t travelled here without any hope we will get a result tomorrow.”
Klopp returns to the Westfalenstadion for the first time since leaving his job as head coach of Dortmund at the end of the 2014/15 campaign, but he has made it clear that his emotional return is not more important than the act of leading the Merseyside club to victory.
“A lot has been said ahead of this match but it is easy for me as I just have friends here,” the 48-year-old added.
“I don’t think about my situation for not one second. We got here early so I had 20 minutes to catch up with old friends – it would have been daft not to have that chance.
“Tomorrow is different, we are focused on the game.”
