Chelsea could be ready to drop all interest in Romelu Lukaku and target Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi instead, reports have claimed.
The Blues have been working on a deal to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge all summer, but it looks as though Antonio Conte is about to give up the chase.
Reports are rife that Lukaku could sign a bumper new deal with the Toffees, and Conte will now target a move for Inter’s Argentina striker Icardi instead.
However Chelsea will face competition from Arsenal as Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is still on the hunt for a marquee signing after failing with a number of attempts to land a new striker this summer.
Inter are determined to keep hold of the Argentina forward, but the Gunners hope by throwing Olivier Giroud in as part of the deal, the San Siro outfit may be tempted to cash in.
Napoli are also in the hunt as they look to replace Gonzalo Higuain, so a three-way battle for the player’s signature could be on the cards before the transfer window closes.
