Chelsea are ready to battle it out with Arsenal for the services of Germany international Shkodran Mustafi, reports have claimed.
The Gunners are chasing the Valencia central defender as they desperately try to find a replacement for the injured Per Mertesacker, who will miss the next three months through injury.
Arsene Wenger refused to say too much when quizzed about his interest in the player, but he did say no signings were imminent, which could leave the door open for Chelsea to swoop.
Blues chief Antonio Conte is also looking to strengthen the heart of his defence and Mustafi, who has bags of experience at the top level despite being just 25, is a target.
Mustafi has a £45million release clause in his contract, but reports in Spain claim Valencia may have to sell for £25million as they look to comply with the Financial Fair Play regulations.
AC Milan have also declared an interest but Mustafi would prefer to play in the Premier League and it could be a straight scrap between Chelsea and Arsenal for his services.
