Chelsea have made a late bid to snatch Axel Witsel from under the noses of Everton and Liverpool, according to reports on Sunday.
The Zenit St Petersburg star is set to leave Russia this summer with a growing number of clubs showing interest in the Belgium international.
And Chelsea are now among the clubs chasing the ex-Benfica star’s signature after seeing their attempts to sign other midfield targets fizzle out.
The Blues have been linked with Roma’s Radja Nainggolan, Leicester City’s N’Golo Kante and Valencia’s Andre Gomes this summer, but fans are still waiting to see who Antonio Conte can attract to Stamford Bridge.
Nainggolan appears set to stay at Roma while Kante and Gomes could be heading to Real Madrid as the reality of not being able to offer Champions League football hits the Blues’ plans.
Witsel is desperate to get out of Russia and had reportedly been close to joining Everton before the interest of Chelsea became known.
