West Ham failed with a late bid for Nampalys Mendy – who will fly into England on Monday to seal his £12m transfer to Leicester City.
The Hammers saw an eleventh-hour bid to snatch the Nice star out of Leicester’s grasp hit the rocks and the 23-year-old will now join Leicester.
Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri will be delighted with the swoop, having earmarked Mendy as one of his priority signings this summer.
The Italian previously worked with Mendy at Monaco and had gone on record as saying he was one of the best midfielders of his type that he had ever coached.
Reports in France claim Nice are very close to sealing an agreement over the fee, which suggests they will not block his trip to Leicester to finalise the transfer next week.
The arrival of Mendy, however, will inevitably lead to further speculation that he is to replace N’Golo Kante as clubs in England and France consider paying the £20m exit fee that is stipulated in the Frenchman’s contract.
