Arsenal and West Ham target Oguzhan Ozyakup should only leave Besiktas for a ‘team of the calibre of Chelsea’.
That is the opinion of Besiktas president Fikret Orman, who has revealed why he resisted an offer for the player from Lazio last season.
The gifted midfielder joined the Turkish club in 2012 after failing to break through at Arsenal, where he had progressed through the youth ranks.
But, last year, he was linked with a shock return to north London while West Ham also emerged as admirers of the 23-year-old Turkey international.
The Serie A outfit approached Besiktas with a formal offer but now Orman has opened up on why he did not want Ozyakup to go to the Italian capital.
“Last season, Lazio made an approach for Oguzhan but I didn’t want him to go there,” he told Turkish radio station TRT.
“Lazio are an average side in Italy. Besiktas are bigger than them.
“If Oguzhan goes to Europe, it should be to a team of the calibre of Chelsea.”
