Rafael Benitez believes Newcastle can avoid relegation this season, despite losing 3-2 at Norwich on Saturday.
The Magpies made the trip to Carrow Road knowing a win would move them level on points with the Canaries and provide a huge boost in their quest for survival.
Serbia international Aleksandar Mitrovic climbed off the bench to twice equalise for the visitors but left-back Martin Olsson rifled in a strike in second-half stoppage-time to clinch a crucial victory for the hosts.
That result has left Alex Neil’s men four points clear of the bottom three while Newcastle, yet to win in Benitez’s three games in charge, are stuck in 19th place, six points from safety.
It is not looking good for the north-east outfit but their Spanish manager is adamant they still have time to turn things around and avoid dropping down to the Championship.
“It is more difficult but we have to keep confident that we can still do it,” he said. “We have seven games to go and we have to keep pushing. If we start winning games we still have time.”
Newcastle are next in action at Southampton on April 9 before playing host to fellow strugglers Swansea City a week later.
