Nabil Bentaleb has told Benfica he would prefer to stay in England after Mauricio Pochettino showed the midfielder the Spurs exit door.
The Portuguese champions have shown some interest in the Algeria international midfielder, who signed a contract extension until 2020 only a year ago.
Benfica were attracted to the 21-year-old holding midfielder partly because they felt his £25,000-a-week wages put him within their budget constraints.
But Bentaleb’s agent, Majid Yebda, has told the Lisbon giants that his client is keen to remain in the Premier League.
Spurs boss Pochettino has confirmed that the midfielder can leave the club this summer after he was left out of the pre-season trip Down Under.
