Chelsea have missed out on the signing of Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels, who has agreed to join Bayern Munich this summer.
The Blues have been heavily linked with a move for central defender Hummels as they look to replace John Terry, but he has opted to stay in Germany with Bayern
The 27-year-old was due to fall out of contract at the end of next season but, rather than risk losing him for nothing, BVB have taken the decision to let the Germany international join their great rivals.
He has yet to pass a medical at the Allianz Arena but looks set to follow the path trodden by Mario Gotze to the German champions.
A fee in the region of 35million euros has been reported for the deal, with Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke confirming the news on Twitter and releasing a statement on Dortmund’s official website.
“Mats Hummels has decided after long, intense reflections to return to his native Munich, eight-and-a-half years after his move to BVB,” it read.
Hummels told Dortmund’s website: “I have not made this decision easily after eight-and-a-half successful years at BVB.
Chelsea will now have to switch their attentions elsewhere as Antonio Conte looks to bolster his defence in time for next season.
