Ajax are keen on adding Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli to their squad on loan if they qualify for the Champions League.
The controversial Italian is not part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans at Anfield and he will be allowed to depart if the club receive a suitable offer.
Besiktas were recently linked with his services but have now ruled themselves out of the race to sign Balotelli as they look elsewhere instead.
Ajax are now reportedly leading the race after opening preliminary talks with Balotelli’s agent, Mino Raiola, last week.
The Dutch club are looking to replace Arkadiusz Milik, who joined Napoli in a £30million deal on Tuesday, and believe Balotelli could be the man to fill the void.
Peter Bosz’s side moved into the Champions League play-off round by beating PAOK on Wednesday and stand just one tie away from making the group stage.
However, it’s understood they will only make their interest in Balotelli serious if they manage to get into the elite European competition.
