Virgil van Dijk won the Fans’ Player of the Season and the Players’ Player of the Season trophies at Southampton’s awards night.
The 24-year-old Dutch central defender, who moved to St Mary’s from Celtic in a £13million deal last summer, took to the Premier League immediately and has gone on to become a key man in Saints’ boss Ronald Koeman’s plans.
Van Dijk has made 33 appearances and scored three goals for the Saints as they remain in the hunt for a Europa League place for a second successive season. And his impact this season has not gone unnoticed by both the fans and his team-mates.
Meanwhile Cuco Martina’s stunning strike against Arsenal at St Mary’s won the Goal of the Season award, while left-back Ryan Bertrand picked up the PresidentÂ’s Choice Award, selected and handed over by club president Terry Paine.
Academy prospect Alfie Jones collected the Young Player of the Season, while club captain Kelvin Davis was handed a secret award after ten years at the club which will end with his testimonial next week.
