The Saints’ scout was spotted at Nurnberg’s 3-0 win at FSV Frankfurt on Sunday – just days after Southampton sent a scout to watch the 26-year-old play for Austria against Turkey.

Burgstaller has had an impressive campaign for Nurnberg in the German second division, scoring 11 goals from out wide as the Bavarians have mounted a promotion challenge.

He is under contract at Grundig-Stadion until 2017 and will have just one year left on his deal at the end of this season.

Saints are aware that he could become a big star at this summer’s European Championship finals and are doing their homework now in case they can sign him up before the tournament begins.

The ex-Cardiff City star was one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signings at the Welsh club but left on a free transfer in January 2015 after making only three first-team appearances.
