Atletico Madrid tried to lure Chelsea striker Diego Costa back to Spain this summer, according to the club’s president.
Costa moved to Stamford Bridge from the La Liga side in the summer of 2014 after his £32m release-clause was met.
Since the switch, the Spain international has impressed for Chelsea and so far has 41 goals to his name.
However, there had been talk that Costa was eager to return to Atletico as he was unsettled in England.
And now the Spanish club’s president, Enrique Cerezo, has revealed that he tried but failed to sign the 27-year-old this summer.
“Costa is a magnificent player. We had the option to bring him back, but Chelsea did not let him leave,” Cerezo told Cadena COPE.
