Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Veretout has revealed he snubbed Premier League offers this summer as he couldn’t face being relegated again.

The Frenchman left Villa Park on loan during the most recent transfer window and he is now spending the season in Ligue 1 with Saint-Etienne.

However, the 23-year-old has explained that he could have continued his career in the Premier League instead of France.

Veretout claims clubs in England’s top flight where after him too this summer, but after a miserable campaign he decided it was best to go back home.

“I lived through relegation, an awful season, and I didn’t want to play in the Championship,” Veretout told French publication 20 Minutes.

“It’s a very complicated league for me, because it doesn’t suit my style of play. There were clubs in England who wanted me, but I didn’t want to relive a season like last year.

“We all know that between the 10th and the 20th spot in England, anyone can go down. That’s why I preferred to return to France.”
