Aston Villa defender Jordan Amavi has admitted he was shocked to see Roberto Di Matteo shown the door.
The Italian was sacked from his job at Villa Park on Monday – despite only being in charge for 124 days.
And Amavi, who is finally fit again after suffering a knee injury last season, has revealed he was surprised to learn Di Matteo had been axed.
“I didn’t see it coming,” said Amavi during an interview with France Football.
“However, we know how it is when a team doesn’t produce results, the manager is targeted. Personally, I think he’s a very good manager.
“When I was still on holiday, he called me to let me know he had faith in me, that he wanted me in the team.
“It’s a shame, that’s how it happens. The club doesn’t have the time, the board want results in order to climb back up the table.”
