It was tough on the Villa keeper who had pulled out a string of fine stops before the interval and was rewarded when Kane beat him, only to see the ball strike the face of the bar.
But once it was 2-0 it was all too much for the disgruntled home fans who cheered when banners calling for the removal of owner Randy Lerner and chief executive Tom Fox were unfurled.
The stewards, with the unenviable task of trying to remove the offending banners, were promptly booed themselves as they made a token effort to snatch them.
Even the Spurs fans got in on the act with chants of ‘Lerner for Arsenal’ which brought rousing applause from the home supporters.
Suddenly, there was no way back for Villa – the story of their miserable season. You couldn’t see a way they were going to rescue anything from the game.
They had one last go, Jordan Ayew’s low shot bouncing out off the post to Rudy Gestede who promptly smacked his shot against the crossbar from four yards
