Spurs arrived hopeful of securing the three points against a Villa side which has only won three games all season and appear doomed to relegation to the Championship as they sit nine points adrift of safety with nine games remaining.

And they dominated for the majority of the game with Kane scoring two of the numerous chances he had throughout in each half to seal the points.

Spurs sit two points off Leicester in second spot in the table, while rivals Arsenal are now six points further back in third.

Kane went close to scoring in the fourth minute when Erik Lamela picked out his run and he lifted his effort over the advancing Brad Guzan but watched as it struck the top of the crossbar and dropped behind.

Spurs continued to enjoy the better of the action and went close again through Kane on 24 minutes when he got free in the area and met a Danny Rose pull-back but saw Guzan save his shot with his legs.

Kane continued to be a menace and had an effort from an angle pushed away by Guzan two minutes later.

Spurs should have gone in front on 31 minutes when Kyle Walker teed up Lamela whose shot was pushed onto the post by Guzan before rebounding off the back of the keeper and Alan Hutton was on hand to clear away the danger.

VillaÂ’s best chance came on 39 minutes when a Carles Gil free kick from the left dropped to Rudy Gestede but his volley was straight at Hugo Lloris.

Kane finally got his goal on the stroke of half time when Dele Alli picked him out down the left of the area with a quickly taken free-kick and he finished into the far corner past Guzan with a left-foot strike.

Kane made it 2-0 in the 48th minute when Alli got away down the left and crossed into the middle where the England man stabbed the ball into the net.

Spurs looked comfortable with their two-goal lead until the 84th minute when Jordan Ayew went along the by-line down the left and hit the near post with his shot, before the rebound came out to Gestede who somehow smacked his effort off the crossbar from a couple of yards out.

On 88 minutes Gestede turned provider when he flicked on a corner but Joleon Lescott saw his effort come back off the back post from close range.
