Has Mathieu Flamini earned a contract extension?
Arsenal’s last game of the season against Aston Villa saw the Emirates wave an emotional goodbye to club captain Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky.
Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger gave glowing reviews of the pair, saying that Arteta will thrive as a coach and that Rosicky “was a privilege to manage”.
However, what of Mathieu Flamini? Wenger confirmed that the French midfielder was out of contract in the summer, and listed him alongside Arteta and Rosicky as midfielder’s who would be leaving the club.
Yet no farewell was had for Flamini, nor was there any mention of him from fellow players.
Indeed, Flamini’s name and number are available to purchase on Arsenal’s new 2016/2017 home kit, whereas both Arteta and Rosicky’s names have been removed.
His re-signing would be surprising with several of average performances this season (bar his man of the match display against Tottenham Hotspur in the Capital One Cup).
Should he stay, Flamini would offer midfield cover behind Francis Coquelin, January signing Mohamed Elneny, and the imminent arrival of Swiss starlet Granit Xhaka.
