Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confessed his fear over the extent of striker Danny Welbeck’s injury.
The England international was forced off in the 24th minute of the 2-2 draw with Manchester City, and Wenger has confirmed the issue is with his knee.
Suffering an injury at this stage of the campaign leaves his place in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the 2016 European Championship finals in doubt, particularly with the 23-man team to be announced on Thursday.
“It’s a knee problem,” Wenger told talkSPORT, “I hope it’s not big – hopefully it’s not a meniscus tear – but we have to wait until he has a scan”.
In more positive news, Welbeck was replaced by the returning Jack Wilshere, who is widely expected to travel to France despite his appearance today being only his second of the campaign.
“He [Wilshere] has shown he is prepared, he still needs this kind of intensity in the games to get completely back to his best, but overall it was a very encouraging performance.”
