Wilshere picked up a knee injury last week but has returned to training and has said he is available for the weekend, but Wenger was more cautious, insisting the midfielder is not yet ready.
Granit Xhaka – and have major injury problems with centre-back Per Mertesacker out until the new year with a knee problem and partner Gabriel out for two months with an ankle injury.
“The squad is strong enough,” said Wilshere. “Maybe we could add a defender because we have picked up injuries, but we are confident that we can take any team on in this league.”
Wenger, in the last year of his contract at Arsenal, admitted that whether he stays or not will depend on performances this season and added: “All the big clubs last season experienced a regret and a feeling of guilt – but that would take something away from Leicester, who had an exceptional season.
“Guilt because you would not have predicted Leicester would win the league. So all the other teams would say, ‘We should have come in front of Leicester’.”
