Arsenal strolled to a two goal victory over FC basel thanks to a first half Theo Walcott double.
The Gunners picked up from where they left over at the weekend as they dominated their Swiss opponents from start to finish and picked up their first win of the group stage.
Walcott opened the scoring on six minutes with a header from close range after the England man converted a Santi Cazola cross in.
The Arsenal forward then doubled his and the Gunners tally when Walcott made it two on 26 minutes after he and Alexis Sanchez interchanged leaving Walcott to drill across goal and into the back of the net.
Arsenal were in very confident mood throughout the match and their first half showing will earn a lot of praise. Chances kept coming and the Gunners could have added to their tally on 33 minutes but Sanchez spurned his shot on goal following a brilliant move from the hosts involving Walcott and Hector Bellerin, Sanchez was found by Cazorla whose well disguised pass located the Chilean striker who was unfortunate to not make more of the chance.
The Basel defence were under constant pressure during that first half and avoided conceding a third after Mesut Ozil side-footed his effort at the back post into the side-netting.
Basel did little after the break to suggest that they would trouble Arsenal and only tested David Ospina on a couple of occasions including on 63 minutes when Birkir Bjarnason’s first time strike was well tipped over by the Arsenal goalkeeper.
Service was soon resumed with Arsenal trying to find a third and almost got it with a minute remaining however Sanchez was denied by Thomas Vaclik at the back post.
The Gunners put in a brilliant performance with their only complaint being that they didn’t add more to the scoreline however they’ll be pleased after piking their first win of the group stage.
