Sam Allardyce’s side currently sit in 17th in the Premier League and their superior goal difference is keeping them out of the bottom three.

They could still fall into the relegation zone if Newcastle beat Leicester on Monday but Arca believes his former side have too much quality.

Arca, who made 167 appearances for Sunderland, believes the north east outfit will eventually prove their class before the end of the campaign.

He told the Chronicle: “I think Sunderland are going to do it, yeah.

“TheyÂ’ve been playing well. They played a lot better against Manchester United and West Ham (United).

“TheyÂ’ve been getting points so I think confidence is getting higher, and they look like they can get points anywhere whereas three or four weeks ago we were thinking ‘Oh theyÂ’re playing this team or that, and they wonÂ’t get anythingÂ’.

“But at the moment they look like they can anywhere.”
