The Nigerian joined the Black Cats after deadline day in September following boss David Moyes’ search for an experienced Premier League striker without a club.

The former Everton and West Brom man fitted the bill but he’s been hampered by groin and thigh problems so far since making the move to the Stadium of Light.

However, the 28-year-old says he’s now over his injuries and hopes to play his part for Sunderland in the weeks ahead.

“My thigh and my groin are fine,” he said. “It is difficult for me, I haven’t had a pre-season or done the majority of the training like the rest of the boys. It isn’t an excuse, it is just a fact.

“These sessions and the work I am doing with the physios are really helping me. I feel really good now, it is just about getting games and power into me and hopefully with a combination of first team training games and reserve games, which I am happy to play to get back quicker, I will be fit and ready to help.”

Anichebe could be considered for Saturday’s trip to take on the Potters as Moyes already has Jan Kirchhoff, Adnan Januzaj, Lee Cattermole, Sebastian Larsson, Steven Pienaar, Vito Mannone and Fabio Borini on the sidelines.
